Avecia Biologics

The project

Avecia Biologics engaged CBSL to assist them in their response to a Cellular Therapy R&D call from the Technology Strategy Board (TSB). They challenged us to identify a consortium and to coordinate the application for funds.

CBSL identified world leading stem cell science at Durham University and established freedom to operate by simplifying a complex patent ownership situation. We put together a consortium to translate this into technology for exploitation.

As well as Durham University, the consortium included Smith & Nephew for their expertise in wound healing products and tissue engineering and Blonde McIndoe Foundation for their translational medicine expertise in the field. Having established the consortium partners, CBSL successfully attracted ~1.0m of funding from Industry and the TSB to fund this project.

The project involved stem cell bioprocess development leading to therapeutic applications, notably for wound healing. CBSL is playing an on-going role in providing technology consultancy and project management.

Our expertise

CBSL has the expertise and methodology to undertake technology audits of organisations to identify world class science and commercial opportunities. We use Technology Mapping to identify intellectual property and assess its strength and coverage by global comparison. We then undertake Technology Analysis in order to assess the value and commercial potential of the intellectual property.

CBSL has extensive knowledge and connectivity in the UK industrial life sciences sector. This enables us to broker effective collaborations between the academic and industrial partners.

The CBSL team has expertise in bioprocess development and product development which has been highly relevant to this project.

Our project management capabilities have ensured that the diverse members of this collaboration are working effectively together.

Testimonial

“Based on their extensive knowledge of the region’s scientific and technical capability, CBSL were invaluable in first identifying potential consortium members and then facilitating the formation of the consortium. They have also made a great contribution to the ongoing programme management of the project..”
