Institute of Human Genetics Newcastle University

The project

The Institute of Human Genetics (IHG) is part of Newcastle University, a world class academic and clinical research organisation with the highest possible RAE rating.

One aspect of its expertise is the Developmental Gene Expression Map (DGEMap) supported by the EU FP6 programme. The value of this testing service is recognised by The Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council who support its infrastructure.

This world class organisation chose CBSL to research and analyse a range of additional funding options. CBSL explored opportunities from traditional academic funding routes to philanthropists and charitable organisations. Part of this work included the analysis of comparable organisations as a benchmarking study. In addition, the intrinsic value of the technology and how it could be applied to the commercial market was investigated. From these options, CBSL developed a number of funding scenarios for the IHG to develop and fully exploit its expertise.

Our expertise

This contract exploited CBSL’s core expertise in life sciences, healthcare and the commercial exploitation of bioscience.

CBSL is well qualified to understand academic funding routes in the UK with key contacts in the major research councils as well as the Technology Strategy Board and BERR.

Using our knowledge and experience of the pharmaceutical industry, we were able to identify a number of routes to commercially exploit IHG’s science. We also made key introductions to potential industrial partners.

This work exemplifies CBSL’s wider expertise in bioscience, technology due diligence, market assessment and business planning.

CBSL adds value for its clients. The IHG was already very knowledgeable of funding sources, however, CBSL was able to work closely with them and bring new opportunities and business models to the table.

Testimonial

“The process of working with CBSL helped us to crystallise the business model for the research infrastructure for which we wanted funding.

CBSL efficiently exploited their extensive network and introduced us to new funding possibilities and potential sources. The funding study was conducted in a very professional manner and will be beneficial to future project development..”
